As long as anyone wants homes to live in or offices to work in, there will always be work available in the building and construction industry.
And of course, it’s not just building the structures. It’s the proper installation of heating and cooling systems. It’s the artistry of building fine cabinets. And it’s creating energy-efficient structures to meet the demands of a more environmentally conscious world.
If you are interested in being part of this lucrative and exciting field, then check out your local ROP. Many of these have excellent coursework and internships to train for success in the building and construction industry.
Here are some of the best ROPs for building and construction.
Coastline Regional Occupational Program offers the following building and construction courses this year:
- Foundation of Residential and Commercial Construction
- Emerging Construction Advances and Changes
- Construction Technology Pre-Apprenticeship
- Study of Modern Craftsmanship and Infrastructure
- Energy Efficiency and Infrastructure of the Future
These courses provide hands-on instruction in skills ranging from basic to advanced. Learn the use of power tools, welding, basic plumbing, estimating, and alternative tools and practices for green home construction.
Baldy View provides three career paths to choose from within the building and construction sector.
- Cabinetry, Millwork and Woodworking
- Mechanical Systems Installation and Repair
- Residential and Commercial Construction
There are a variety of courses to choose from, including Cabinetmaking, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Systems, and Apartment and Home Repair/Remodeling.
A few selected courses at Baldy View can lead to OSHA 10 certification.
Four pathways are available at the Tri-County ROP to train students for the building and construction field:
- Furniture and Cabinet Construction
- Construction Academy
The courses for these pathways are taught at area high schools.
Clovis High School’s ROP offers several courses in building and construction, including:
- Basic Metals
- Construction Tech
- Building Scaled Structures
Courses are taught at Clovis High and Clovis East.
The Career Technical Education Partnership (CTEP) offers the following courses:
- Construction Technology
- Computer Aided Drafting
- Metal Fabrication
These courses provide hands-on experience through internships and community classrooms.
Eden Area provides coursework through its Industrial Technology pathway.
Here are the courses that are being offered this fall.

- Welding/Metal Fabrication
Some courses in auto repair also fall within this pathway.
El Dorado Union offers courses in Woods and Finished Carpentry.
They are also providing a Metal Fabrication course this year.
The Marin Builders Association has partnered with the Marin County Office of Education to create a Construction Technology class.
Topics covered in this comprehensive, hands-on class include job safety/job site requirements, hands-on experience with the skill saw, power drill, hammer, measuring tape, etc.; introduction to building of sawhorses; reading a diagram/plan for building the frame of a floor; roofing; and much more.
Merced County’s Construction Technology course provides instruction in the areas of:
- Trade vocabulary
- Construction related mathematics and communication skills
- Blueprint reading
- Building codes
- Construction processes related to planning, layout, materials, assembling and finishing
- Rough and finished carpentry standards
- Building standards for residential and commercial construction
- Construction materials, tools, and equipment
- Career opportunities.
